The New Yorker Hires 26-Year-Old Amelia Lester as Managing Editor

…26-year-old Amelia Lester has scored one of the most coveted editorial spots in the literary world, hired by David Remnick to serve as managing editor of the prestigious magazine, The New Yorker. In response, Twitter hummed with praise, surprise, and soul-searching from readers around the country.

The NY Observer reports that Lester had served as an editor at the Paris Review. Here’s more: “[Lester] used to be a fact-checker at The New Yorker and checked all-star writers Seymour Hersh and Jane Mayer. She’s replacing Kate Julian, who is moving to Washington, D.C. where her husband just got a job.”

GalleyCat found a few scattered pieces Lester wrote for the online side of the magazine, but we especially appreciated her short piece about novelist Salman Rushdie‘s habit of making short cameos in movies.

Publishers Must Change the Way Authors Get Paid

Shout it from the rooftops, or better yet, hashtag it on Twitter. Itâ€™s time to turn the page on how authors get paid.

Times have changed, and with them, every aspect of the publishing landscape is morphing. And from my vantage point, nowhere is it changing more than in marketing. Authors arenâ€™t waiting and watching to see what publishers arenâ€™t doing for their books â€” they are jumping in feet first and months ahead of their houses to make sure thereâ€™s a serious marketing and publicity effort.

And publishers arenâ€™t gnashing their teeth over the authorâ€™s involvement anymore â€” they are encouraging it. Co-op is more costly than ever and eating up marketing dollars. In almost all cases, publishers are making it clear that they expect authors to supplement their marketing/PR effort in various ways and, in some cases, even soliciting the authorâ€™s help with both time and yes, money.

As a result, today the authorâ€™s marketing/PR effort is often equal to or even greater than what the house is doing…
